TALKING ABOUT CANCER:

"October 2, 1996 was the day that changed my life. Now that I’m back on the bike, I want to change people’s lives throughout the world. We’re all affected by this disease and united as one world, we can defeat it. LIVESTRONG!"

“Of course I want to win an eighth Tour de France, but the most important issue is taking the global epidemic of cancer to a much bigger stage. That is the first priority here.”

“This campaign is an easy way to help the world and at the same time have fun throughout the cycling season.”

How the Ride For LIVESTRONG Works

IT'S FREE !!!!

Each Team Astana rider is racing this year to bring global awareness to cancer. Choose a rider to support (one per email address) based on the rider’s cancer profile. We’ll then track the race kilometers that your rider pedals during the 2009 season. Monthly and grand prizes will be awarded (see below). It’s FREE to enter, so go ahead - choose your rider and join the Team Astana cancer fighters!

Monthly RIDE FOR LIVESTRONG Award

Each month, a supporter for the rider that logs the most race kilometers in that particular month will be randomly picked to win a signed jersey from that rider and a NIKE LIVESTRONG cap.

Example: Benjamin Noval logs 1,000 race km in April (highest total km out of all the riders). A random supporter of Benjamin wins a signed jersey from Benjamin and a NIKE LIVESTRONG cap.

RIDE FOR LIVESTRONG Champion

At the end of the season, supporters for the rider that logs the most race kilometers for the entire season will be randomly picked to win one of the following prizes. Winners will get to choose from one (1) of the following prizes in the order that they are randomly chosen.

  • One (1) Team Astana race-ridden 2009 Trek Madone 6.9 road bike

GET STARTED:

How do I pick my rider?

On the homepage, click on the riders’ pictures to view their profiles including information about themselves, past race results and their connections to cancer.

Once you find the rider you’d like to support, click the “ENTER CONTEST” button on the profile page. You will be redirected to a page where you will be required to submit information.

Can I pick all 27 riders?

No, but nice try! Only one email address per entry! Email addresses will be validated by a RIDE FOR LIVESTRONG newsletter.

Is there a deadline to enter?

Nope! We want supporters all season long to join Team Astana in the fight.

So I can just look at the race schedule and estimate who will race the most kilometers?

Not really. But that’s the part that will keep you biting your nails all season. Each member of Team Astana rides his own particular race schedule (somewhere between 7-20 races) depending on personal goals, strengths, fitness, and Team goals. And only the rider and Johan Bruyneel know his exact schedule. That is a well-kept secret. You can assume that Levi Leipheimer will race the Tour de France, but what will make up the rest of his eight-month season? Johan knows. Then, factor in crashes, illness, strategy, and many other variables, both planned and otherwise.

How will race kilometers be calculated?

Race kilometers will be obtained from the sanctioned UCI races determined by the Astana Cycling Team. Race kilometers for that day will always be rounded up (ex. 171.2 kilometers will become 172 kilometers).

Only rider miles in sanctioned UCI races will be counted in the contest. The first race is January 18 and the last possible race day is October 31, 2009.

What happens to the riders that participated in the Tour Down Under?

Their race km will factor in the overall race km total, however since the contest launched in February there will be no monthly winner for January. They may have had an early start to the season, but remember the season is 10 months long and there is still A LOT of racing left.

What happens if a rider drops out or abandons?

If a rider abandons, drops out or does not finish (DNF), the kilometers will be calculated to the nearest quarter marker of the total race. Example: If a rider drops out at approximately the ¾ marker and the race is 100 total kilometers, he will be logged for 75 kilometers for the day. This will be determined and calculated by the Team’s management agency, Olympus Sarl.

What happens if there is a rider kilometer tie or donation tie?

If there is a rider kilometer tie, then a random drawing will be held combining all supporters of the riders that are tied.

How do I keep track of my rider’s progress?

Follow the Team daily right here and at www.astana-cyclingteam.com. We’ll post monthly and grand prize winners. We’ll also be adding cancer updates throughout the season and keeping everyone posted on our efforts.
